Connection between bodyweight and future laying performance observed in Brazilian study
Hisex Brown birds were recently the subject of a study to show the correlation between bodyweight and performance.
For many years, Hendrix Genetics Layers R&D team have observed the connection between achieving a healthy bodyweight at the 5 week rearing period and future laying performance.
This study was conducted at the University of Marilia in the poultry laboratory and was coordinated by Diogo Ito, Hisex Technical Support Coordinator in Brazil. 270 Hisex Brown chicks were reared, and at 35 days of age, they were classified in three categories: Heavy (110% or above the average bodyweight); Medium (between 90% and 110% of the average bodyweight) and Light (90% or below standard bodyweight). The birds were then raised according to the lighting and nutritional guidelines recommended by the Hisex management guide. At 23 weeks of age, researchers evaluated laying performance (percentage of lay) and average egg weight (in grams).
The results were published at the FACTA-APINCO Symposium, an event organized by the Brazilian Foundation for Poultry Science and Technology. It was observed that between 18 and 23 weeks of age:
- Heavy hens started production earlier and laid heavier eggs at an early age
- Light hens delayed production and produced smaller eggs
The results of this study are important to confirm the need to monitor and manage bodyweight during the rearing period. By paying close attention to this measure, our customers will have even more knowledge and tools to obtain excellent performance.
